5-yr-old Dalit girl raped and killed in Gurgaon

Ground Report | New Delhi: 5-yr-old Dalit girl raped; A five-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped and murdered in a Gurgaon village on Sunday morning. The police have detained his neighbour, a 22-year-old labourer from Bihar, for the crime. Police said that during preliminary interrogation, he allegedly confessed that he had committed the offense under the influence of alcohol, Indian Express reported.

The incident took place when the minor's father was at work and his wife and their three children - two sons and a girl - were at home. The accused allegedly went to their house and took the girl out on the pretext of buying something to eat. When the child did not return for hours, her mother informed her husband and went out to search.

The girl was found with the accused in an unconscious state in the field, who immediately fled the spot. The child was declared brought dead on being taken to the hospital. An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 302 (punishment for murder), 376(2) (rape), and relevant sections of the POCSO Act and SC/ST Act.

DCP (South) Dheeraj Setia said, “The girl had injury marks on her private part and neck. The cause of death will be known after the post-mortem, which will be conducted by the medical board on Monday. The accused is a neighbor and used to visit his house frequently. He admitted that he was drunk at the time."

Locals pelted stones at police

The DCP confirmed that some locals pelted stones at the police and tried to stop the officials from arresting the accused. “We rescued him and took him to another place. There was some resentment among the local people. But people should not take the law into their own hands. Action will be taken against them,” he said.

The victim's father, a labourer from UP, said that they had celebrated her birthday on Saturday and the accused was present along with other tenants.

“He has been living here for the last 6-7 months. Earlier also on one occasion, he had taken my daughter out but not for long. Today I left for work at 9 in the morning. My wife and three children - two sons aged 10 and 2 and my daughter - were at home. When my daughter did not return for a while, my wife informed me, and she along with a neighbour went to look for her,” said the father.

Rape cases in India

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released on Wednesday shows that on average, around 77 rape cases were reported across India every day in 2020, taking a total of 28,046 such incidents during the year.

According to NCRB data for the year, of the total cases of crimes against women in 2020, there were 28,046 incidents of rape involving 28,153 victims, which saw the outbreak of COVID-19 and the pandemic-induced lockdown. Of the total victims, 25,498 were adults, while 2,655 were under the age of 18.

The number of rape cases as defined in Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code stood at 32,033 in 2019, 33,356 in 2018, and 32,559 in 2017. As per the NCRB data for the respective years, the figure for 2016 was 38,947.
