Ground Report | New Delhi: Indian cities water risks; Thirty Indian cities will face increasing water risks in the coming decades, said Kaushal Kishore, Union minister of state in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs al Lok Sabha.

According to a report by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Water Risk Filter, which is an online tool to assess the severity of water risk faced by places, estimates that 100 cities in the world face the largest increase in risks of water by 2050. 30 of India have been identified as cities that will face increasing risks related to water in the coming decades.

The Government was not aware of any matter related to more than 25,000 tonnes of waste that entered the oceans during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, which created threats to human life, said Kaushal Kishore al Lok Sabha.

Kishore added that Rs 10,168 crore had been allocated to Union states/territories under the solid waste management component of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, launched on October 1, 2021.

According to the comprehensive DPR, the total annual irrigation under the KBLP is 10.62 lakh ha comprising 8.11 lakh ha in Madhya Pradesh and 2.51 lakh ha in Uttar Pradesh. KBLP aims to provide benefits to the Chhattarpur, Tikamgarh, Panna, Sagar, Damoh, and Datia districts of Madhya Pradesh and the Banda, Mahoba, Jhansi, and Lalitpur districts of Uttar Pradesh in the Bundelkhand region, as well as the districts of Vidisha, Shivpuri and Raisen from Madhya Pradesh. The project also provides for the supply of drinking water to around 62 lakh people in the region.

As reported by the status of Telangana in WQMIS during the year 2021-22, of the 174,725 samples analyzed, 411 samples are contaminated. The state details of the sample analyzed during the last five years are in the Annex.

It is estimated that 72.368 million liters per day (MLD) of wastewater are generated in urban areas in India. The 31,841 mld wastewater treatment capacity was available in class I cities and class II (tier 2) cities against this, said Bishweswar Tudu, Union minister of state for Jal Shakti al Lok Sabha.
