20 percent increase in rape cases in Delhi

Ground Report | New Delhi: Rape cases in Delhi; The increasing cases of rape and molestation in the capital Delhi. There has been an increase of about 20 percent in the cases of rape and molestation in Delhi last year. This figure is till 31 October in the year 2021.

According to the ToI report, Delhi Police had registered 1429 rape cases till October 31 last year, while this year the figure is 1725. There has been an increase of 20.43 percent in molestation cases. Where 1791 cases were registered last year, 2157 cases have been reported this year.

The reason for the increase in cases in Delhi this year is also being told due to the lockdown imposed last year. In the year 2020, there was a decrease in the cases of crime due to the lockdown caused by the Corona epidemic.

The newspaper quoted police sources as saying that the current figures match with the figures of the year 2019. Between January and October last year, there was a decrease of 28 percent in rape cases in Delhi as compared to 2019.

Similarly, there was a decrease of 32.19 percent in the year 2020 in the cases of molestation as compared to 2019. In 2020, a combined 2,344 cases of abduction and kidnapping of women – filed separately depending on the nature of the complaint and the age of the victims – were registered in Delhi.

Many of these cases are of teenagers running away from home or fighting with their parents. This year 3,342 such cases have been registered. There has also been an increase of 6.5 percent in cases registered under breach of modesty as compared to 350 last year with 373 cases registered this year.

According to statistics, in more than 97% of cases, the accused were acquaintances of the victims, while rapes by strangers were around 2%. Newly appointed police chief Rakesh Asthana has asked senior police officers to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against crimes against women. All district DCPs have been asked to directly supervise the investigation in rape cases and pay extra attention to cases where the victims are minors. Officials said a study has been done to map the areas where more crime against women has been reported and measures are being taken accordingly.
