“About 570,000 applications have been received and of these, 178,000 are women,” said one of the officials cited above.

Aspects on which NDA will now have to act expeditiously include medical standards for women, housing, training capacity, security and privacy arrangements, physical segregation of living quarters, related physical and electronic surveillance measures, and additional gender-specific requirements.

The physical and medical standards for men to enter NDA are extremely stringent. Another official said similar standards are being prepared for women in the NDA entry age group (16.5 to 19 years). Students become eligible to take NDA and Naval Academy exams while they are in class 12.

Those who pass the entrance test have to face the Services Selection Board (a rigorous personality and intelligence test spread over five days); The candidates accepted by SSB will have to undergo a medical examination before the UPSC releases the final merit list.

women eligible to join NDA

The apex court's order makes women eligible to join the NDA, which was formally inaugurated 66 years ago and till now has male patronage, nearly three decades after they have been allowed to serve in select branches of the Army, Air Force, and Navy Service Commission (SSC) officers.

Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane said that the Army is evolving its induction process through technology up-gradation to fit the changing combat scenario. He also said that India's "dramatization process" is underway while reviewing officials for the passing out parade of the NDA's 141st course at Khadakwalsa in Pune, amid a grand event showcasing the valor and martial power of the Army.

Women will be given the same training as male cadets. The training academy at Khadakwasla has the capacity to train 2000 cadets every year. However, the Army would require a separate infrastructure to train women candidates.
