Who was Reuters Journalist Issam Abdallah Killed by Israeli Army?

Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah was killed by what has been determined as Israeli tank fire while covering the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred on October 13, 2023, and has since sparked significant concern and investigation.

Issam Abdallah, aged 37, was a Lebanese video journalist known for his bravery and dedication to capturing the essence of some of the most critical news stories of the past decade. His work brought him to the frontlines of the Syrian civil war, the Russo-Ukrainian War, and other significant global conflicts.

In 2020, he was nominated as Reuters Video Journalist of the Year for his coverage of the Beirut port blast, providing some of the earliest and most impactful images of the tragedy.

The fatal incident took place in an area that the Israeli military has described as an active combat zone. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have acknowledged the firing of artillery into Lebanon in response to an explosion near a security fence near a kibbutz. However, the IDF has not admitted that it was their strike that resulted in Abdallah’s death.

Abdallah was part of a group of journalists, clearly identified by their press-labeled jackets, who were reporting on the strikes between Hezbollah and IDF near Aalma ech Chaab. A missile or grenade struck the group, leading to Abdallah’s untimely death and injuries to six other journalists from various news agencies, including Reuters, Agence France-Presse (AFP), and Al Jazeera.

Who was Reuters Journalist Issam Abdallah?

Issam Abdallah was a dedicated Lebanese video journalist working for Reuters, born in 1986 in Khiam, Nabatieh Governorate, Lebanon. He tragically lost his life on October 13, 2023, at the age of 37, while reporting on the conflict between Israel and Hamas in southern Lebanon.

Abdallah began his career with Reuters in 2007 as a freelancer while completing his university studies. He was known for always carrying a video camera and a camera for still photographs, capturing pivotal moments of intra-Lebanese conflicts. His coverage extended to major global events, including the Syrian civil war and the Russo-Ukrainian War.

In 2020, Abdallah’s exceptional work during the Beirut port blast earned him a nomination as Reuters Video Journalist of the Year. His footage provided some of the first and most striking images of the disaster. He was also part of a larger team that won an award in 2022 for their coverage of the Russo-Ukrainian War.

On the fateful day of his death, Abdallah and other journalists were covering the strikes between Hezbollah and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) near Aalma ech Chaab. A missile or grenade struck the group, leading to Abdallah’s death and injuries to six other journalists from various news agencies.

Abdallah’s last post on Instagram, a week before his death, was a photograph of Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian journalist for Al Jazeera who had been killed by Israel in 2022.

He was buried on October 14, 2023, in his hometown of Khiam, next to his father, who had passed away a year earlier. Journalists honored his memory by placing their cameras on his grave.

International community expressed deep concern
